Beyond Consumerism: how do we communicate an alternative vision of prosperity?

Adfree Cities National Conference 2022 with Amy Isham presenting CUSP research on the role of materialistic values in the pursuit of sustainable wellbeing
May 2022

What is ‘post-consumerism’ and how do we get there? What are the values underpinning it? And what are its implications for late stage capitalism and the growth economy? These were the questions addressed by the panel of academics and advertising industry representatives, debating the role of advertising in the new economy at the 2022 Adfree Cities National Conference in London.

CUSP researcher Dr Amy Isham spoke to her CUSP research with Tim Jackson and Birgitta Gatersleben into the problematic role of materialistic values in the pursuit of sustainable wellbeing.

For people wishing to create healthy, sustainable cities with thriving public spaces, the whole Adfree Cities Beyond Consumerism conference is a great place to start. In collaboration with the Badvertising campaign, the conference brought together residents, health campaigners, artists, climate activists, ad industry workers, academics and planners who are resisting corporate advertising and finding solutions to its dominance over our minds and our culture.

The video of the panel is embedded above and can be accessed on the Adfree Cities website (alongside all the other sessions of that day).
