The Water We Swim In | Podcast Series

With contributions from CUSP researchers Tim Jackson, Peter Victor and Simon Mair, this gripping new narrative podcast series is tackling the big question: What does system change actually mean?
July 2023

We’ve all heard the cries echoing from climate marches: “SYSTEM-CHANGE, NOT CLIMATE CHANGE!”. But what does that actually mean?

Produced by Tilly Robinson, a Global Environmental Change and Policy graduate from Imperial College London, The Water We Swim In is the result of two years of research into the reality of ‘system change’. Collaborating with award-winning sound designer Tony Churnside, and award-winning musician Drew McFarlane (of Glass Animals), TWWSI investigates the invisible forces leading us towards the climate crisis and system-collapse.

Over seven episodes, the podcast team talks to world leading academics, activists, and journalists. Hotly debated headline issues, such as North Sea oil, water privatisation, Universal Basic Income, free market ideology, economic growth and the rise of the Far Right, are contextualised, explained, and incorporated into the bigger picture.

Carefully produced, beautifully thought-through, and not shying away from the most existential philosophical questions, the series provides a rich resource for researchers, practitioners, activists and engaged citizens alike.
