Choosing a new economic agenda for Europe | Brussels Economic Forum with Tim Jackson

CUSP Director Tim Jackson in fierce debate with high-profile panel on prospects in the EU for reconciling economic growth with social cohesion, fairness and sustainability

Brussels, 18 June 2019

Can we address the urgent climate breakdown challenges with the current growth model? What economic policies are needed for Europe to become carbon neutral and prosperous while increasing fairness? Do we need a Green New deal in Europe? Is it realistic to pursue an overall economic objective other than growth? How can we meet environmental and social concerns without playing them against each other? How can we share evenly the cost of fighting climate change? These are the questions addressed in a panel with CUSP Director Tim Jackson at the Brussels Economic Forum, 18 June 2019.

Moderated by Viktoria Dendrinou (Bloomberg), the panel is titled ‘A new kind of growth for Europe?’. Co-discussants include Valdis Dombrovskis (Vice-President, European Commission), Nadia Calviño (Minister of Economy and Business, Spain), Gita Gopinath (Chief Economist, International Monetary Fund) and Riccardo Illy (Chairman, Gruppo Illy).

The full video of the panel can be accessed via Youtube (Session beginning at 6h 38min). For reflections by Tim on the conference, please see the blog page.

About

The Brussels Economic Forum (BEF) is the flagship annual economic event of the European Commission, attracting around a thousand participants every year and widely covered in the media. The BEF this year will debate “key challenges for the European economy, such as the role of the European Union in the new global order, how to build more inclusive societies in which the benefits of digitalisation and globalisation reach everyone, and how the future growth model for Europe can reconcile economic growth … with social cohesion, fairness and sustainability.”
