Social Enterprises + Food Systems Series

Workshop Series

Social Enterprises + Food Systems

England, Wales & Scotland | Jan-Feb 2024

As part of the SEFS research project, our partners at Shared Assets CIC will be running a series of workshops for social enterprises operating in the food system, with events taking place in England, Wales, and Scotland.

Following initial conversations with the six Social Enterprises who are partners in the project, these workshops will bring together a wider set of people involved in social enterprises so they can learn from each other about what has worked well in terms of scaling, what challenges remain, and what support is needed for the scaling of social enterprise activities around sustainable and healthy food.

Join us at the event for your region to learn from your peers and help co-develop a good practice guide for social enterprises aiming to scale their work on healthy and sustainable food.

If you have experience of working in a social enterprise that has attempted, or is thinking about, scaling its activities around food, and would like to share these with others in the spirit of collective learning: we would love for you to come along to this workshop. We can pay a contribution towards your time and expenses if that helps you attend. Places are limited, so please only sign up if you are confident you can come along in person.

We can offer £100 for up to 7 people to prepare, travel and contribute to the workshop. We have a limited budget to support participation, and are keen that these funds go to people who would otherwise not be able to attend, so would ask you to consider that in deciding whether to ask for your costs to be covered.

Over two hours, we will get to know each other’s work, explore how we think social enterprises can help transform food systems, and discuss the opportunities and barriers to scaling up the work of social enterprises at present to help inform the ‘good practice guide’.

About

UK food systems are under threat. Vulnerabilities in supply chains have been exposed by the emerging effects of climate change, global trading instabilities, and regressive labour practices. For consumers, poor diets have become endemic and a leading cause of preventable disease, with increasing prices and pushing people into food poverty. Business can play a key role in addressing the failures in our food system. This new collaborative research project led by CUSP researchers at Middlesex University and the University of Surrey, seeks to explore the contribution of social enterprises (SE) to the delivery of healthy, sustainable, and inclusive local food systems. More details can be found on the project page.
