The Care Economy: Redefining Prosperity in a World Beyond Growth
Online | 24 Nov 2025, 7pm (GMT)
Care is the foundation for life itself, yet in the modern economy it is neglected, undervalued, and often invisible.
Join Britain’s oldest economic think tank, the Economic Research Council, for a powerful and timely discussion with Prof Tim Jackson, one of the world’s leading voices in post-growth economics and author of The Care Economy.
This talk will explore how an economic system built around productivity and profit has eroded the social and ecological fabric of care, from the undervaluing of health and education to the exploitation of the planet itself. Jackson offers an accessible manifesto for re-centring care at the heart of policy, culture, and everyday life, creating a blueprint for an economy that is both humane and sustainable.
The event will consider:
- Why care is an economic as well as moral foundation of prosperity
- How growth-driven systems commodify wellbeing and weaken community
- What a truly “caring economy” would look like in policy and practice
- How re-embedding care could restore balance between people, planet, and profit
About the speaker:
Professor Tim Jackson is Director of the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity at the University of Surrey and author of the acclaimed Prosperity Without Growth and Post Growth: Life After Capitalism. His latest work, The Care Economy, combines philosophy, history, and economics to outline a vision of prosperity built on compassion, justice, and ecological balance.
