On 8th February 2022, the European Commission hosted an in-depth, multi-disciplinary panel event for 150 policymakers across the European Commission on “Economic Sustainability for the 21st Century”, comprising a rich and diverse set of experts in sustainability economics to discuss the implications of the post-growth challenge.

According to Jean-Eric Paquet, Director General of the Research & Innovation Department of the European Commission curating the event, “within the European Commission the case for a post-growth model is won”; key questions now needed to be addressed about how we make the actual transition to a growth-independent system.

As one of several expert presenters, CUSP researcher Christine Corlet Walker spoke to that challenge, introducing our sector-specific, policy-oriented work on a systematic approach for identifying and overcoming the growth dependencies that are baked into welfare systems across Europe.

Academics from across the green growth, degrowth and post-growth spectrum were also invited to make short interventions; other speakers included Andrew Fanning (Leeds University), Guntram B. Wolff (Bruegel), Julia Steinberger (Lausanne University), Mario Pansera (University of Vigo), Hans Stegeman (Triodos Investment Management), Zora Kovacic (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), Alessio Terzi (DG ECFIN), Roman Arjona (DG GROW) and Sandrine Dixson-Declève (Club of Rome). The keynote was provided by Mike Asquith, speaking to his recent EEA report ‘Reflecting on green growth—Creating a resilient economy within environmental limits‘.

The recording of the event can be accessed on the Commission’s website.
